  • How to Host a Poker Tournament

We want to help you plan a successful home poker tournament. While a long tradition of the professional poker world, the tournament format is still relatively new to the home poker game. Hosting a poker game is nothing new to some, but the tournament involves a different kind of preparation.

Many of you have likely already added the tournament to your regular home game. If so, you will still benefit from a lot of the information included in this section. You may find information that helps you resolve problems you've had with hosting past tournaments, or else some enhancements that you can add to your existing tournaments. You're encouraged to run through the links on the left menu, skim through the material that's already familiar to you, and spend your time on the material that's new to you.

Some of you will be learning the nuances of tournament poker for the first time. You may have seen the game played by professionals on TV, but in this section, you will find all of the information that you could need to run a fun and successful home poker tournament. You're encouraged to go through all of the links in the left menu in the order that you see them.

Here is a breakdown of the links that you will find in this section:

    • Understanding Tournament Poker: Learn the specific nuances of tournament poker and they differ from the 'cash games' or 'ring games' that you might be used to. Tournament poker is its own animal, as you'll see.

    • Choose Your Game: A poker tournament features one single poker variation dealt over and over again. Choose your game well, it's the backbone of your tournament. Most favor Texas Hold 'Em, others might want to try something different.

    • Buy-In and Re-Buys: You will need to determine what it costs for each player to enter the tournament, as well as if they will have a chance to re-buy more chips as the tournament progresses.

    • Chip Distribution: You'll need enough chips in enough different colors to accommodate each of your players.

    • Prize Distribution: Your tournament will either be winner-take-all or else you will award multiple prizes to your top-finishing players.

    • Fixed, Spread, and Pot-Limit: Choosing your poker game is one thing, but determining the way in and extent to which bets and raises are made can be just as important.

    • No-Limit: For many, this is the king of poker. When you can push all of your chips into the pot on any given hand, that's excitement.

    • The Multi-Table Tournament: In a tournament, you don't need to restrict yourself to a single table of action. You can have as many tables of as many players as your home can accommodate.

    • Cheat Protection: Though we'd like not to have to talk about it, people will be people, and you need to at least be on the lookout for the wrong element in your game.

    • Putting It All Together: Enough talk, time to equip yourself with everything you've learned and start to put the tournament together for real.

    • Tournament Planning Worksheet: For your use, we offer a worksheet where you simply fill in the blanks. Your home poker tournament is just a few steps away.
