| Music To Our Ears
One great big thread built up on RGP over the last little while. Mark Parisi got it all going with his question of what music everybody else enjoys listening to while they play poker. Here is what some people had to say:
Robert Cray, Dusty Springfield (Mark Parisi, who suggests nothing loud or distracting)
The Doors, Bob Seger (Lee Munzer)
Bob Seger (Ream)
Anything Irish (Irish Mike)
The common thread seemed to be no music that is loud or distracting. I can say from personal experience that They Might Be Giants is one huge mistake. Everybody stops what they're doing and sings along to what they know and laughs at what they don't know. No better way to bring a game to a grinding halt.
Then, this giant thread fell apart while a select few took a great idea and scattered it, challenging each other to 80s music trivia. It was shameless.
When things got back on course, Patti Beadles suggested that music distracts players from the tells of other players, that no music allows better notice of tells. On the flipside, bskut suggested that the right music actually allows one to clue out everything in the room EXCEPT the game and its players.
Some interesting suggestions and aside from a minority of them, a common thread that the music played at a home game needs to be 'mellower' than some. Having the music in the background creates excellent atmosphere, but should not do so at the expense of the game's fluid movement of bets, draws, and such. It's strictly for background, so pop and dance seem to be out of the question. Blues seems ideal, as well as any rock that doesn't fly off the wall. I once tried playing cards without music, and could feel right away that something wasn't quite right.
