When is the poker going to start on Sunday?
There will be promo for the game on TV all day, which may or may not interest you. Also, you may not want to play through the 4-6 PM EST pre-game time slot. One way to handle this is to decide when the poker playing stops, and work backwards. If you definitely want to stop playing at 6 PM EST and you'd like a 5-hour session, you can figure out the rest. This is particularly important for people playing in a poker tournament. In fact, you can't really answer this question until you ask...
Will you be playing tournament poker or regular ring game poker?
A ring game is where hands are dealt over and over (ie. Dealer's Choice) and the game can stop at any time when players want to stop playing. If this is the kind of poker you plan to play, you can start whenever you want. Check out Marc's Dealer's Choice Super Bowl Playbook. If you've never played a poker tournament and would like to learn more, read up on the basics at our Host the Hold 'Em Bowl Tournament.
For those of you playing a tournament, the question of when to start is everything. Nobody wants to be bound to playing out the final hands of a tournament when the football starts. You either need to be generous in the time that you allot to tournament play or you simply need a time limit with some format for how the purse is distributed at the end. For example, the chip leader wins first place, 2nd chip leader wins second place, etc. Or whoever's left in the tournament takes their share of the purse based on their share of the chips. This is a little more onerous, so the first idea is recommended. Why not check out our own Host the Hold 'Em Bowl Tournament for a great Super Bowl Sunday tournament format?
Will you be playing through the 4-6 PM EST pre-game time slot?
There's lots of competition in this time slot, but for poker players, more so than ever. NBC will be airing the "Travel Channel World Poker Tour Battle of Champions". They will have some great action from top players Howard Lederer, Gus Hansen, and 2003 World Poker Tour Champion Alan Goehring. The show will likely stick with its regular format of keeping viewers that are new to the game informed about what is happening. For more, check out Marc's article on the WPT on NBC.
A tournament game can benefit from the time slot by giving something to watch for players who have been eliminated from the game. The only players that miss the WPT game are the ones closest to winning the tournament, so everybody's happy. And obviously, a ring game can stop at any point.
Will you be feeding your guests?
If so, it's a good idea to prepare your food on Saturday. See the Scribe's QB Sack Lunch for the NFL's best ideas on what to serve your guests!
