Protect Your Home Game From Poker Cheats,
    by Marc Wortman
"Though I should have preferred to spare you the reading of this...we had better face the facts about playing Poker for money."

"The best protection against Poker cheats is the knowledge of how they operate and some ability at recognizing their slick sleight of hand and other crooked ruses."

John Scarne, Guide to Modern Poker

Home poker is meant to be a friendly game where players don't have to worry about being robbed at the table. It's one thing to lose your money to fair play, but to lose your money to cheats is something all home poker players need to take seriously.

What you will find here in the Poker Cheat section is information on how cheats operate. While knowledge of how they operate won't guarantee you're protected from skilled cheats, it's important to at least know the basics.

Nobody at HomePoker.com is a stage magician or expert at sleight of hand. The information that you will find here is useful, but being given to you second-hand from research done on the subject of poker cheats and card-cheating in general. You are not about to read the inside scoop from a professional. Sources that have been used in research of this section have been books on poker, books on card magic, and Usenet discussion.

There are three main categories of information in the Poker Cheat section, outlined to the left:

  • Sleight of Hand: Much cheating occurs with players who are able to manipulate the deck or cards in their hands. These types of tricks are similar to those employed by card magicians, and much of the techniques are the same. It isn't to warn you against playing poker with card magicians, but given the inclination, a card magician makes for a great poker cheat. The first type of sleight of hand described is the Mechanic's Grip. This is a technique for holding the deck from which most sleight of hand tricks are born.

  • Other Methods: "Magic tricks" with cards aren't the only way that the poker cheat can operate. There is no end to the ways in which the poker cheat can team up with other cheats in the same game, bring their own trick cards or chips into another person's game, or interact with the pot. All of the cheating methods described here are real threats and real ruses that are used by poker cheats.

  • Protection: Knowledge of how poker cheats operate is one defense. There are also other ways to protect yourself from potential cheating in your home game. These include establishing better control over the players in the game, the cards that are used, and the way in which dealing is done. At the end of the day, the goal is to create a home game atmosphere that is protected enough that a poker cheat is discouraged from playing in that game.
